the presentation snuffbox of Frederick the Great to General von

Wrangel in Hermann Historica, 76th auction, lot 5277, sold for

€ 12,500, and a similar snuffbox in “Kaiserlicher Kunstbesitz aus dem

holländischen Exil in Haus Doorn”, catalogue number 138.

In his (tr.) “History of the Seven Years‘ War” Frederick the Great

surmises (tr.) “Who could have anticipated or conceived that Prussia

would be able to resist the attack of this dreadful alliance between

Austria, Russia, France, Sweden and the entire Roman Empire and

emerge from a war, threatened with downfall from all sides, without the

least territorial loss?”. However, this was not his only success resulting

from the Peace of Hubertusburg on 15 February 1763; he also managed

to establish Prussia as the fifth major European power.

stehen und aus einem Kriege, wo ihm überall Untergang drohte, ohne

den geringsten Verlust an Besitzungen hervorgehen würde?”. Doch

nicht nur dies gelang ihm mit dem Frieden von Hubertusburg am

15. Februar 1763, er schaffte es dadurch auch, Preußen als fünfte euro-

päische Großmacht zu etablieren.

Frederick the Great – a snuffbox on the Peace of Hubertusburg,

Berlin, 1763

Copper enamelled in blue, remnants of gilding. In the centre of the

domed lid crowned guard eagle with profile portrait of the King, sur-

rounded by the places and dates of his victorious battles in the first to

third Silesian Wars from Molwitz 1741 to Freiberg 1762. The body on

the obverse and reverse with crowned Prussian eagle seated above a

trophy bundle, on the side crowned cypher “FR”, placed between flag-

staff finial covers with repeated cypher “FR”. The interior enamelled in

white, the inside of the lid with hand-painted depiction of a monument

entwined with laurels and with inscription (tr.) “To the noble peace of

the greatest King Frederick 15 Febr. 1763”, flanked by trophies and

flags. The copper trim of the lid with remnants of gilding, engraved

tendril ornaments and eagle with spread wings on the obverse. Dimen-

sions approx. 8.5 x 6.5 x 4.5 cm.
