24 | Los 1209 Bedeutendes Langes Messer, süddeutsch, um 1530/40 Man mag in einem sog. „Langen Messer“ eine Art Werkzeug für die Jagd sehen oder die Waffe eines Landsknechtes, aber beim ersten Blick auf das Lange Messer, dass wir Ihnen an- bieten dürfen, sieht man sofort, dass dieses Stück weit mehr als das ist. Eine hochwertige Klinge verbindet sich mit einem Gefäß, welches mit allergrößter Kunstfertigkeit gearbeitet wur- de – die Parierstange wurde aufwendigst geschnitten und die integral geschmiedete Hilze wurde mit vier verschiedenen fei- nen Einlagen ausgestattet, deren Kunstfertigkeit ihresgleichen sucht und die man heute wahrscheinlich nur noch in einem Museum oder in unserer Auktion findet. Lot 1209 A significant South German „Langes Messer“ (one-handed sword), circa 1530/40 The Germans also called this kind of one-handed sword a “Long Knife”, indicating that it was not only meant to serve as a sword in battle, but also as a tool on the hunt – an extra-long hunting hanger, so to speak, certainly also suited to keep an attacking wild boar at bay. But even at first glance it becomes evident that fighting and hunting were not the only tasks for this sword. It was of equal importance to show status and wealth by impressing one’s subjects, visitors and bystanders with the outstanding craftsmanship of the weapon. A blade of excellent quality ends in an iron hilt of outstanding artisanship, with inlays of bone, horn and staghorn, ending in a bird’s head pommel, its extended quillons with spirally fluted decoration, the finials chased in the shape of dragon’s heads, the knuckle guard on the obverse chased with fully sculptured monsters’ heads.
