| 43 A bone-inlaid wheellock rifle by Peter Danner, Nuremberg, circa 1580 Narrow, octagonal barrel, alternating fullers near the muzzle. Smooth bore in 14 mm calibre. Dovetailed brass sights. The mark “PD” and two serpents struck at the breech, along with the Nuremberg proof mark and intertwined mark “NE”. The lock fitted with an external wheel, safety lever and spring-lock pan cover. Openwork wheel cover, finely engraved cock and lever. Adjustable trigger. The full shaft made of walnut (possibly origi- nally blackened) with lavish inlays of engraved and blackened bone. Depiction of maritime mythical creatures, a Nuremberg mermaid on the cheek piece. A depiction of Turks in con- temporary dress on the underside of the stock and the butt cap. Two brand marks “N” on the butt. The lid of the patch box spring-loaded. Original ramrod with threaded iron sleeve. The patch box still containing three original attachments (cleaning rod, worm, extension sleeve). Length 113.5 cm. A superlative Nuremberg wheellock rifle in almost mint, untouched condition.
