514 | A quarter-section of a Roman silver plate with relief decoration and inscription, 2nd - 4th century A.D. Quarter of a heavy round silver plate, originally with a diameter of circa 47 cm. In the centre remains of a central medallion with animal scene. The raised rim with a bucolic-Bacchian scene in relief: in a strongly raised relief on the left presumably the head of a maenad, and on the right that of a silene. Behind both heads an altar with sacrificial fire. In between, in a landscape, predators like lions and a hunter with a bow. Fine and impressive work. On the back, near the foot ring, a punched inscription in Greek: ΚΛ ● ΚЄΛЄΡΟС ΚЄΛЄΡΟС ΑΘΟΥΙΓ ● Θ , which refers to a Claudius Celer. Length 23.5 cm. Weight 0.88 kg. Viertelstück eines schweren runden Silbertellers, ursprünglich mit ei- nem Durchmesser von ca. 47 cm. In der Mitte Reste eines zentralen Medaillons mit Tierszene. Der erhabene Rand mit einer reliefierten bukolisch-bacchischen Szene: in stark erhabenemRelief links der Kopf eventuell einer Mänade, rechts der eines Silens. Hinter beiden Köpfen jeweils ein Altar mit Opferfeuer. Dazwischen in angedeuteter Land- schaft Raubtiere wie Löwen und ein Jäger mit Bogen. Meisterlich feine und imposante Arbeit! Auf der Rückseite nahe des Fußringes einpunzierte Inschrift auf Grie- chisch: ΚΛ ● ΚЄΛЄΡΟС ΑΘΟΥΙΓ ● Θ . Länge 23,5 cm. Gewicht 0,88 kg. Provenienz: Aus einer Privatsammlung in Süddeutschland. Erworben in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren im europäischen Kunsthandel.
