Auf der einen Seite mit gro- ßem conchenförmigen Schild, darin plastisch im Halbrelief das Haupt der Göttin Athena. Die durch den Helm gekennzeichnete Göttin blickt streng und unbeweglich geradeaus. Die seitlich herabfallenden, sich teilweise kreuzen- den Locken stehen mit ihrer naturalistischen Bewegtheit in deutlichemKontrast zur Strenge des göttlichen Gesichtsausdrucks. Seitlich und oben wurde das Haupt von einem Palmetten- fries gerahmt, der an einen Nimbus erinnert, unten liegt der Hals auf einer Leiste auf, diemit einem aufgemalten Eierstabmotiv verziert ist. Die Schauseite des Antefix war farblich ge- fasst. Auf weiten Teilen des Gesichtes und Halses hat sich die originale rosa-rötliche Farbgebung bewahrt, die weißen Augäpfel be- sitzen dunkle Pupillen, während der Helm hellgrundig hervorsticht. Die seitlichen Teile der hoch aufragenden Con- che sind verloren, oberhalb der Stirn ist das An- tefix gebrochen und fachmännisch zusammen- gesetzt. Rückseitig wurde die verlorene tönerne Stabilisierungsstrebe durch einen Metallstab ersetzt. Höchst eindrucksvolles Bauglied, das wohl an einemTempel der Gottheit angebracht war. Maße 20,5 bis 28 x 36 x 37 cm. Provenienz: Aus deutscher Privatsammlung. Zuvor südwestdeutsche Sammlung Dr. H. Schaeffer, von diesem vor 1970 im Schweizer Kunsthandel erworben. Beiliegend ein Zerti- fikat der Galerie Puhze, Freiburg, von 2009. A Lower Italian terracotta antefix with the polychrome-painted head of Athena, 4th - 3rd century B.C. The shield on one side featuring the head of the goddess Athena, carved in half relief. Wearing her characteristic helmet, the goddess looks straight ahead with a stern expression. The naturalistic movement of her curls falling down on each side, some twisted around each other, forms a sharp contrast to the severity of the divine countenance. A palmette frieze bor- der resembling a nimbus enclosing the head on the sides and top, the bottom of the neck resting on a strip embellished with a painted egg-and- dart motif. The front of the antefix was painted in colour. The original reddish-pink hue can still be seen on large portions of the face and neck, the white eyeballs have dark painted pupils, while the helmet stands out with its light background. The elongated side elements of the conch have been lost, the antefix broken off above the fore- head and expertly repaired. The missing origi- nal reinforcing bar in clay on the back replaced by a metal rod. Exceptionally impressive ar- chitectural structure, probably designed for a temple of the goddess Athena. Dimensions from 20.5 to 28 x 36 x 37 cm. P rovenance : From a German private collec- tion. Previously part of the SouthWest German collection belonging to Dr. H.
