186 | A magnificent ornamental plate with marks for Hermann Ratzersdorfer, Vienna, 19th century Rock crystal, silver, partially gilt and enam- elled. The curved, recessed and fan-shaped plate on a circular base. The elaborately engraved cartouches arranged in segments, with sumptuous Renaissance décor in rock crystal. The crosspieces with three-dimension- al, moulded grotesques, enamelled in cobalt blue, red, green and white, embellished with extremely fine, gilt appliqués. The bowl with a modern pedestal. Given its age, in good con­ dition. The gilding rubbed in places. Minor imperfections. The plate and base with several hallmarks. Diameter 32.4 cm Hermann Ratzersdorfer was born in Vienna, where he became a highly regarded silver and goldsmith, attracting attention in particular for his extravagant works of art. He specialised in enamelling. His master’s mark was first registered in 1842. In 1855, he took part in the first World Exposition in Paris, winning the second prize without further ado. At the 1873 World Exposition in Vienna, he attained particular glory, with his neo-Renaissance works receiving special accolades from the grand jury and the general public. C f .
