A South German extremely fine and rare scale model of the Nuremberg chörlein or oriel, circa 1900 A free-standing, faithful reproduction of the Nuremberg chörlein in finely carved, painted wood, polychromely painted glass and en- graved copper. Mounted on a contoured, oc- tagonal pedestal, the likewise octagonal shaft embellished with Gothic lancet arches and tracery. Upon this the hexagonal oriel with delicate relief carvings of tableaux from the life of Mary, brightly painted window glass with scenes from the Passion of Christ and recur- ring Gothic elements in the form of lancet arches and tracery. With a shingle roof. The door at the back in hammered and engraved copper, also openworked in places. The oriel on offer here is modelled on the stone chörlein on the vicarage of St. Sebald in Nuremberg. The original dates to circa 1370 and was replaced by a copy in 1902 owing to the mate­ rials being prone to erosion. The original “chörlein” can be found today in the German- isches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. Dam- age due to age. The paintwork with minimal rubbing. Height circa 40.5 cm.
