(1765 - 1837) war ein Angehöriger des Hauses Hannover. Nach einer Karriere in der Royal Navy warWilhelmals direkter Nach- folger seines älteren Bruders Georg IV. von 1830 bis 1837 König von Großbritannien und Irland sowie in Personalunion König von Hannover. Wilhelm war der letzte Monarch, der beide Herrschaftsämter vereinigte. Mit seinem Tod endete die seit 1714 bestehende britisch-hannoversche Personalunion. Provenienz: Sammlung Gerhard Lengelsen. Gilt symmetrical brass bar hilt with double shell-guard, decorated with a Saxon steed on the obverse, with the cipher “W” on the reverse, both surmounted by a crown, leather-covered grip with copper wired wrap and backpiece cast in relief. Leather scab- bard with brass mounts. Slight signs of age and use. Length 100 cm. According to the consignor the present small-sword could be a weapon based on a design idea by the king himself. William IV (1765 - 1837) was a member of the House of Hanover and served in the Royal Navy. After his brother George IV passed away, he became King of Great Britain and Ireland and in personal union King of Hanover. William was the last monarch who held both titles. When he died in 1837, the personal union betweenGreat Britain andHanover, which had been established in 1714, came to an end.
