Im Vergleich zur rotfigurigen apulischen Ware mit ihrer sehr stark reduzierten Farbig- keit zeugt diese hellenistische Keramik von einer Farbrevolution in der Keramikprodukti- on. Durch neue Techniken und ein deutlich erweitertes Farbspektrum - eingesetzt wurden intensive Tempera-Farben, die nach dem Brand aufgetragen wurden - wurden nunmehr Bilder geschaffen von einer nicht gekannten Farbigkeit. Nur selten hat sich von den Farb- pigmenten noch so viel erhalten wie auf die- sem Objekt. Provenienz: Aus in Deutschland verwahrter Privatsammlung. Erworben in den 1990er Jahren im englischen Kunsthandel. A Canosan volute krater with a depiction of a warrior, Southern Italy, end of the 4th - 3rd century B.C. Polychromatic volute krater. On the bellied body a warrior running to the right with helmet and greaves, holding a circular shield and a spear, with a flowing blue chitoniskos. Pink background. The secondary image shows a lady in profile, wearing earrings and a pearl necklace. Palmette decoration below the hand­ les. The volute discs are adorned with stylised rosettes. Moreover, every volute has a perfor­ ation in the centre, designed to insert a flower or other kind of decoration. The krater is open at the base, so it was used as a grave vessel. The base broken and restored. Otherwise intact. Height 39 cm. Diameter 18.5 cm. Unlike the red-figured earthenware from Apulia, with its extremely restrained colora- tion, this Hellenistic work attests to a colour revolution in the production of pottery. The in- troduction of new techniques and a significantly extended colour spectrum – intensive tempera pigments, which were applied after the firing process – gave rise to pictures of unprecedented vibrancy.
