3835 Schnepper, Sachsen, 1. Hälfte 18. Jhdt. Schlanker, geschwärzter Stahlbogen. Alte, gekonnt geknüpfte Hanf- sehne. Vergoldeter Einbund, Fangschnur, Aufputz aus grünen Woll- Pompons. Schlanke Säule aus Obstbaumholz mit Intarsien aus polier- tem, fein graviertem Geweih (einige ergänzt), die Vogelmotive, einen Satyrkopf, eine Landschaft und barocke Akanthusranken zeigen. Kol- benkappe aus dunklem Horn. Intaktes Klappenschloss mit Nadelste- cher. Bolzensattel, Bolzenhalter, Einbund und Pompons wurden in der späten Gebrauchszeit ergänzt. Teilweise leicht beschädigt, Altersspu- ren. Länge 71 cm, Breite 57,5 cm. Elegante, formschöne Armbrust, die den höfischen Waffen in der Rüstkammer Dresden gleicht. Der vergoldete Einbund und die grünen Pompons entsprechen den Farben des sächsischen Landeswappens und sind an Armbrusten sächsischer Provenienz nachweisbar. Waffen die- ser Größe erscheinen in den Inventaren der Rüstkammer Dresden als „Wandschnepper“ und dienten im 18. Jhdt. zum Scheibenschießen als Belustigung für Adel und reiche Bürger. Vgl. H. The old hemp bowstring skilfully knot- ted. Gilt cord bridle, decorative tassels of green wool. The slender tiller made of fruitwood, with inlays of polished, delicately engraved antler (several replaced), depicting bird motifs, a satyr’s head, a landscape and baroque acanthus tendrils. The butt cap made of dark horn. Intact flap lock with a double set trigger. The bolt rest, bolt channel, cords and pompons were replaced at a later date while still in use. Slightly dama- ged in places, signs of age. Length 71 cm, width 57.5 cm. An elegant, graceful crossbow, similar to the courtly weapons at the ar- moury in Dresden. The gilt bridle and the green pompons correspond to the colours of the Saxon state coat of arms and are found on crossbows of Saxon provenance. Weapons of this size are listed in the inventories of the armoury in Dresden as “Wandschnepper” (target crossbows) and were used for target shooting during the 18th century as entertainment for the nobility and wealthy citizens.
