52 | Empress Augusta (1811 - 1890) – a magnificent presentation portrait vase, made by KPM, circa 1875/80 The handles of the amphora vase shaped like eagle’s heads. White glazed porcelain with a blue base and grisaille painting, the gilding partly etched. The front with a round portrait of the wife of Kaiser Wilhelm I in an off-the- shoulder dress, with a pearl necklace, a diadem in her pinned-up hair. On her upper arm she wears the Order of Louise on a ribbon bow for ladies. Surrounded by a finely etched gold border and surmounted by the imperial crown amidst laurel branches. The partially gilt eagle’s head handles made of white bisque por celain. Mounted on an octagonal porcelain pedestal, en suite decorated in blue and gold. The KPM blue underglaze sceptre mark and the red imperial orb mark “KPM” in overglaze on the base. Total height 61.5 cm. An exquisite presentation vase of the German empress in excellent condition. Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, daughter of Grand Duke Charles Frederick and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna Romanova (the sis ter of Tsar Alexander I), first met her husband, Prince Wilhelm of Prussia in 1826, at the age of fifteen. At this time, Wilhelm’s older broth er, the later King of Prussia, Friedrich Wil helm IV, was the crown prince. They were mar ried in the chapel of Charlottenburg Palace on 11 June 1829; the later Emperor Friedrich III was born in 1831 and their daughter Luise, subsequently Grand Duchess of Baden, in 1838. Following the death of Friedrich Wil helm IV of Prussia, Augusta became Queen of Prussia at the age of 50 on the coronation of her husband on 2 January 1861 and German Kaiserin 10 years later by the imperial procla mation of 18 January 1871. Gifts of Empress Augusta are considered enormous rarities. 253361 I - € 7.500
