| 35 4026 4027 A South Italian drinking bowl with painted decoration, late 4th century B.C. Red-figure bowl with ring stand. Two handles of circular section extending upwards at a slight angle from the centre of the body with perpendicular breaks. Painted decoration on both inner and outer surfaces. A wreath running around the interior. The base recessed on the inside and painted with the image of a youth striding to the left, above a flower in front of an altar. Crowned with a wreath, his head looking over his shoulder, ornamental chains around his chest, left thigh and above his ankles. Holding a diadem with ribbons (wedding crowns?) in each hand. The scene can be interpreted as courtship. Palmettes on the exterior between the bases of the handles. Each side features a scene bordered by two tendrils between the handles. On one side again, the same young man, this time kneeling with a diadem in his right hand and a ball (perhaps sweet pastry?) in his left. A cloak hanging freely behind him on the right. On the other side, a young woman sits on a rock, her lower body covered with robes, her upper body naked. She wears a diadem, earrings, a necklace, bracelets and anklets, as she gazes into a mirror held in her left outstretched hand. Holding a ball of sweet pastry in the hand extending downwards. A wreath in the field behind her, before her a band with trailing ends. Aphrodisiac scene representing the suitor and his beloved. Diameter of the bowl without handles 17.7 cm, with handles 26.3 cm. A small, yet charming example of South Italian red-figure pottery. Provenance: Private Austrian collection. Some of the collector‘s items inherited from the consignor‘s father (acquired from the 1970s to the 1990s), some purchased by the current owner in the Austrian and German art trade and from private collections (1980s to 2010). 332746 I - € 600 4027 Oichnoche aus schwarzer Glanztonkeramik und Schälchen, Großgriechenland, 3.
