| 41 4054 4054 A Greek silver phiale with gilt decorative band, 5th century B.C. Greek offering bowl with a central omphalos in the centre of the base, the curvature of which serves as an abutment for the sacrificer‘s finger. The belly curves outwards from the omphalos and, after a soft folding on the shoulder, draws inwards slightly. Above it a funnel-shaped, high rim that merges into an outward-facing rim. A cymation on the shoulder consisting of a band of tongues arranged in a row. These have been hammered into the bowl with the help of punches, whereby an overlying gold band has been attached to the cymation with the help of the punches and probably a sticky mass underneath. Small parts of the surface are covered with oxide deposits, but for the most part it is in excellent condition and with an almost mirror-like surface, the top layer of the patina preserving the finish of the ancient polish. The bowl without any deformation or damage. A rare, beautifully preserved masterpiece of Greek silversmithing and of simple elegance. Diameter 13.17 cm. Height 7.1 cm. 326216 I - II € 7.500
