16 | Los 4077 Buntes Mosaik mit Orpheus in Tondo, römisch, Ende 2. - 3. Jhdt. n. Chr. Mehrfarbiges Mosaik aus kubischen Tesserae in Originallage, modern auf Betonplatte montiert. Maße: 75 x 76,5 cm. Im zentralen Tondo ist Orpheus mit phrygischer Mütze dargestellt, nach halbrechts gewandt, eine Lyra spielend. In den Ecken des Rechtecks um das Tondo befinden sich vier Dreiecke: links unten und rechts oben in Schwarzweiß, links oben und rechts unten in Brauntönen und Rot. Das Tondo ist von zwei Kreisen umgeben: einem äußeren weißen und einem inneren bunten Kreis mit ineinandergreifenden Haken, beide von schwarzen Linien eingefasst. Orpheus‘ Brustbild ist in Gelb-, Rot- und Brauntönen gehalten, mit schwarzen Steinen zur Betonung der Linien und weißen Steinen als Glanzlichter. Um die Mütze liegt ein Lorbeerkranz in Grüntönen. Geringfügige Fehlstellen, ansonsten attraktives römisches Mosaik der mittleren Kaiserzeit. Multi-coloured mosaic made of cubic tesserae in original position, mounted on a modern concrete slab. Dimensions: 75 x 76.5 cm. In a central tondo, a bust of Orpheus with a Phrygian cap, playing a lyre, his face turned half-right. Four triangles in the spandrels: bottom left and top right in black and white, top left and bottom right with brown and red tones. The tondo is framed by a white outer circle and a colourful inner circle of interlocking hooks, both bordered by black lines. The bust of Orpheus is in shades of yellow, red, and brown, with lines emphasised by black stones and highlights by white stones. A laurel wreath in green tesserae encircles the Phrygian cap. Minor losses, otherwise an attractive Roman mosaic from the Middle Imperial period. Provenance: Rhenish private collection, acquired circa 1990 in the Aachen branch of a Brussels art dealer.
