| 255 A South German or South Eastern European noble Renaissance crossbow, entirely inlaid in bone, circa 1580 Heavy, tapering steel prod with knotted hemp bowstring and anchors, decorative tassels of green woollen pompoms. Slender wooden tiller, completely veneered in polished staghorn, lavishly decorated on all surfaces with blackened engravings, including scrollwork, masks, a barred helmet, a coat of arms with an armoured arm and scimitar (possibly from South Eastern Europe?), a bear and wild boar hunt, castle hill, Leda and the Swan, resting nymphs etc. Bone butt cap with engraved stag’s head. The nut made of antler and secured with thread. Complete, multi-axle lock with a safety lever and simple folding trigger, the trigger guard with remnants of gilding, cranequin lug. Horn bolt channel and folding brass sight are later replacements, along with the bow and tassels. Minor imperfections in the bone strips at the front, cracked in places. Slightly damaged in places, signs of age and use. Length (incl. ring) 61 cm, width of the bow 55 cm.
