A ivory mounted silver figure of a knight in manner of the “Schwarze Mander” from the cenotaph of Maximilian I in Innsbruck, Hanau, Neresheimer & Söhne (founded 1893), circa 1900 Silver, ivory. Square stand decorated with openwork foliage. Figure of a knight. His suit of armour and two swords elaborately crafted and decorated. Carved ivory face. Foot stamped with Hanau fantasy marks. In good condition. Originally the figure probably held something in his right hand. Dimensions 24 x 9 x 8 cm, overall weight 564 g. Maximilian I planned his own tomb with 40 bronze statues of his (real and imagined) ancestors, predecessors, and role models such as King Arthur and Dietrich von Bern. His grandson Ferdinand I began the project, and eleven figures were completed by the time of Maximilian’s death. There are 28 larger-thanlife statues in the Innsbruck Hofkirche today.
